GRENADA—The Government of Grenada, in partnership with RestoringVision, announced they have launched Restoring Vision Grenada, a Prime Ministerial Vision Initiative that will expand access to vision care across the tri-island nation, beginning with the distribution of 50,000 pairs of near-vision eyeglasses. Through this initiative, the organizations said, vision screening and eyeglasses provision will be integrated into Grenada’s public health system, reaching people through health facilities and community-based delivery across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique over the next 12 months, bringing screening and eyeglass distribution closer to communities and helping to identify individuals experiencing vision challenges and connect them with appropriate care.

“Our ultimate and only goal is to provide compassionate, people-centered health care by making available 50,000 reading glasses free of charge to every Grenadian in need,” said Philip Telesford, Grenada minister of health. “We are not only improving eyesight—we are strengthening productivity, we are restoring dignity and the well-being of our people… A person’s vision is the hinge on which opportunity swings.”

Presbyopia can significantly impact daily activities, productivity and independence if left unaddressed, RestoringVision said in the announcement. By embedding screening and the dispensing of near-vision eyeglasses into existing health systems, including at the primary care level, the program aims to ensure more people receive timely and accessible care.

In addition to providing near-vision eyeglasses, RestoringVision said it will support training for healthcare workers, helping to build local capacity and ensure the long-term sustainability of vision services across the island nation. The ministry of health will provide leadership for the initiative, facilitate the integration of services into public health platforms, support staff training, and oversee data collection and reporting, the announcement said.

“I am particularly proud of the fact that this [program] is being done throughout the public health system and primarily through our primary healthcare system,” said Dickon Mitchell, prime minister. “That is for me the key part of this partnership, ensuring that it is not an NGO coming to Grenada and seeking to operate outside of the public health system, but that we have an integrated partnership. I look forward to the success of this program.”

The partnership also establishes a joint monitoring and evaluation framework to assess outcomes, measure impact and identify opportunities for continuous improvement through the initial pilot phase, the announcement stated.

The official launch ceremony, hosted by the ministry of health in collaboration with RestoringVision, took place at the St. David Health Center in Grenada with attendees including Mitchell, Telesford, chief medical officer Dr. Shawn Charles, district medical officer Dr. Renaldo Clarke, Ian Rodgers and Keisha A. McGuire of RestoringVision, and local health officials, district leaders, healthcare personnel and community members.

The Grenada-RestoringVision memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishing the partnership was signed in March, the announcement stated. RestoringVision has also signed MoUs with two other Organization of Eastern Caribbean States member states, including Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Lucia.
