Newsweek Recognizes Moanalua Medical Center for Cancer Care

“Being named among the nation’s best hospitals for cancer care is a testament to the outstanding care our teams deliver every day, and it comes at a meaningful moment for Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii,” said Ed Chan, market president, Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii. “As construction progresses on our new oncology wing at Moanalua, we’re building on an already strong foundation with an eye toward the future. Our goal has always been to give every patient access to world-class cancer care close to home. This expanded facility will allow us to serve even more people with the care and support they need.”

In addition to expanding its physical footprint, Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii has enhanced access to expert care and personalized support for cancer patients. Through its Cancer Second Opinion service, members can connect virtually with oncology subspecialists across the country for expert guidance — without leaving the islands. Patients also have access to the Cancer Support Line. Using the support line, patients work with trained specialists who help navigate every step of the care journey. This includes emotional support, financial guidance, and connections to community resources. For people undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy, e-visits are offered to provide support in managing side effects at home and guidance on when to seek additional care.

“Cancer care today is in its most exciting era,” said Jennifer Fu Carney, MD, chief of oncology and hematology at Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii. “Our integrated team-based model allows for earlier cancer detection. It also brings together specialists across multiple disciplines to optimize personalized treatment and supportive plans for patients. Combined with advances in molecular, biomarker-driven testing and clinical trials on emerging therapies; strong care coordination; and convenient tools like virtual visits and care navigation, we’re able to offer more to our patients throughout their cancer journey.”

Newsweek’s America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care 2026 list evaluates hospitals across 7 key medical specialties. Its rigorous methodology is based on 4 primary pillars:

  • Peer recommendations: Tens of thousands of physicians, health care professionals, and hospital leaders were surveyed to evaluate the reputation of hospitals among their peers.
  • Hospital quality metrics: Performance data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the American Hospital Association were used to assess hospital quality.
  • Patient experience: Patient feedback was incorporated to measure the overall quality of the hospital experience.
  • Patient-Reported Outcome Measures: Hospitals were evaluated based on patients’ functional well-being and quality of life.

This recognition reflects Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center’s continuous investment in advanced technology, multidisciplinary care, and health equity. Moanalua Medical Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Its outpatient oncology practices hold certification through the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative — 1 of only 2 practices in Hawaii with that distinction.
