NEW YORK—TIME and Statista recently published their list of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies for 2026. The list includes 750 companies spread across more than 40 countries, with the U.S., United Kingdom, and Japan hosting the highest numbers. Several fashion and luxury brands are featured prominently, as well as a major optical company, underscoring the industry’s continued push toward stronger environmental and social responsibility as sustainability efforts face shifting corporate priorities and a more challenging regulatory landscape.
TIME said that this has been a “complicated year for chief sustainability officers.” The publication attributes this to executives becoming more focused on operational efficiency and cost-savings, evolving corporate sustainability goal calculations and the U.S. government’s ending of tax credits for renewable energy and reduced environmental regulations. Despite this, TIME reported that leaders in Europe and Asia continue to prioritize policies and incentives supporting greener initiatives, often focused on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The list, now in its third year, was created by TIME and data firm Statista to recognize the world’s largest and most influential companies for their transparency, accountability and environmental impact. Companies were assessed based on factors including commitment and ratings, reporting and transparency, environmental and social stewardship, and the exclusion of non-sustainable businesses.
EssilorLuxottica ranked 238th overall. Several fashion brands linked to luxury and eyewear groups also appeared on the list, including Burberry, Moncler, Ralph Lauren, and Brunello Cucinelli (EssilorLuxottica); Puma (Kering); Hugo Boss (Safilo); and Guess (Marcolin).
At the top of the 2026 ranking was Schneider Electric, which was named TIME and Statista’s most sustainable company.
