Elizabeth Escobedo, OD, FAAO, FSLS.
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla.—Latinos en Optometry, a non-profit organization dedicated to gaining a broader representation of Latinos and Spanish-speaking professionals within the optometry and larger eyecare professional community, has announced the appointment of Elizabeth Escobedo, OD, FAAO, FSLS, to its board of directors, effective immediately. Dr. Escobedo is an associate professor at Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry. She received her bachelor of science degree in biology from California State University, Long Beach, and earned her doctor of optometry degree from the Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry. Dr. Escobedo was also a recipient of the Johnson & Johnson Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care and the Excellence in Community Service Award.
“About a year ago, I came across the Latinos en Optometry website and immediately became intrigued with the organization’s mission statement as it directly reflects my beliefs and goals,” Dr. Escobedo told VMAIL. “I am very passionate about working with underserved communities and working with students by teaching them how to approach encounters in which they will be treating patients from diverse backgrounds. I am very excited to be joining the board for Latinos en Optometry and can’t wait to be able to contribute to the organization’s mission.”

Dr. Escobedo completed her residency in cornea and contact lenses at Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry. During her residency, she managed ocular disease in both primary care and emergency care settings at Hastings Cherokee Hospital. She is a fellow of both the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Education Society and is fluent in Spanish.
