Dave Brown, IDOC President and CEO, Speaks to Brand Refresh, Investor Support, and What’s in the Pipeline

NEWARK, N.J.—Well into a successful rebrand that kicked off in late 2025, and fresh off the launch of an exclusive line of contact lenses, IDOC, with its CEO and president Dave Brown at the helm, has had a busy year so far. Vision Monday recently had the opportunity to talk with Brown, who first joined the organization in 2014, as part of its VM Conversations interview series. An alliance of independent U.S. optometrists, IDOC was founded in 1999 and has since grown to more than 3,200 member practices in the U.S. and is part of a global community of more than 7,000 owners.

In a wide-ranging, comprehensive and exclusive conversation with Anne Cooper, editorial director of Vision Monday and 20/20 magazine, Brown touched on the organization’s new brand identity, the recent launch of Clerra, a comprehensive ophthalmic lens range available through IDOC Labs, as well as the acquisition of GSRx, which joins Three Rivers Optical in the IDOC lab network.

Importantly, Brown also spoke extensively on how the organization is evolving to strengthen the support for its members with new investor involvement, specifically that of Doug and Dame Mary Perkins, founders of the global optical chain Specsavers and other international businesses, while staying true to its mission that members can stay independent while benefiting from collective support.

“They are U.K. optometrists and they have been hugely successful,” Brown said of the Perkins couple. “When they looked at IDOC and saw our strong support for independent optometry, they said this is a place of independent owners that we think we can bring some of our expertise but also recognizing that IDOC has built a tremendous business, and they can learn some things from us as well.”

Brown pointed to their support as being especially meaningful, not just because of the couple’s experience as successful independent business owners, but also through their partnership, supporting the business with supply chain and scale. Initiatives like the launch of Clerra, acquisition of the GSRx lab, and the expansion of IDOC labs have been possible with the additional support, he said.

“What was so exciting for me as CEO and for our entire team to welcome these investors, there’s the incredible amount of expertise and just scale that we didn’t have at IDOC,” Brown said.

Brown said in his conversation with Cooper that the organization’s refreshed brand identity and messaging platform, anchored by the phrase “Independent Together,” reflects both IDOC’s long history and its future direction. “We wanted to refresh the brand, but also bring it together so that all the pieces kind of feel the same, look the same so that people know they’re coming from IDOC and make it easier to find us.”

He added that the message speaks to the balance at the heart of the group’s mission. “Being independent is what we’re all about,” he said. “We serve independent owners in private practice, but we also want those independent owners to thrive, and we feel a community and ecosystem is really important.”

A major part of IDOC’s strategy is addressing the twin pressures of affordability and complexity in eyecare. Brown said the launch of Clerra was driven by feedback from members and a desire to simplify decision-making in the practice.

Clerra, Brown said, is designed to help practices streamline their lens offerings while supporting margins. IDOC believes the curated line can cover 90 percent of what a practice dispenses and generate meaningful savings, with Brown suggesting that practices adopting Clerra can save at least 25 percent on their typical lab bill.

IDOC also recently expanded its lab network through the acquisition of GSRx, a move that strengthens the company’s ability to provide service and pricing advantages to members, Brown said.

“We have a lab on the East Coast and a lab on the West Coast. We have different expertise. We’re able to now move jobs back and forth,” he said. “What IDOC is doing, I think, is building a really unique lab ecosystem in the space.” He added that the ecosystem is intended to support “transparency, real pricing power, better margins and, frankly, to some degree less reliance on the big-branded players.”

Looking ahead, Brown said IDOC’s pipeline includes digital and operational tools designed to reduce administrative burden for practices. Current initiatives include an e-commerce pilot, HR services, expanded bookkeeping, bill pay and payroll support.

“The pipeline is full,” Brown said. “We want to make it easier. It’s a really hard job in some ways… But when we can bring the right products, when we can help with affordability, when we can help with complexity and the community, I think those things make us and our ‘Independent Together’ mantra really meaningful in the marketplace.”
