A federal grand jury indicted Jon Christopher Williams, DMD, a dentist in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., on 16 counts related to tax evasion, failure to pay employment taxes and obstruction of an IRS investigation.
According to the indictment, Dr. Williams filed tax returns and paid associated taxes through 2013, then stopped entirely. From 2020 through 2023, he allegedly failed to report approximately $3.37 million in gross income and failed to pay roughly $1.08 million in personal income taxes. He also allegedly failed to report or pay approximately $133,360 in employment taxes from the second quarter of 2020 through the fourth quarter of 2022.
The obstruction charge stems from a series of emails and letters Dr. Williams allegedly sent to the IRS agent investigating him and other government officials. He reportedly sent invoices demanding $525,000 from the agent and various government officials, and stated they could avoid payment by terminating the agent from her position and from future government employment.
Each tax evasion and employment tax count carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. The obstruction count carries a maximum of three years, according to an Aug. 11 news release from the Department of Justice.
