Mitsui Chemicals Vision Care Materials Relaunches Expanded ‘Do Green’ Sustainability Platform

TOKYO—Mitsui Chemicals’ Vision Care Materials Division has relaunched the “Do Green” platform expanding its scope beyond bio-based lens materials to address environmental impact across the eyeglass lens life cycle, the company said in an announcement. Do Green was originally introduced as a label for eco-friendly ophthalmic lens materials and now encompasses material innovation, manufacturing, carbon reduction and circularity, while maintaining optical performance standards.

As patient awareness of environmental impact grows, Do Green supports sustainability-minded choices across the life cycle of the lens, from materials and manufacturing to carbon transparency and recycling, without compromising optical quality, Mitsui Chemicals said. Key priorities of the platform include sustainable product development, waste reduction through recycling and manufacturing efficiency, and carbon-reduction initiatives aligned with the division’s sustainability goals.

The Do Green initiative also includes lower-carbon manufacturing efforts and renewable energy adoption, including solar power at SDC Technologies, a Mitsui Chemicals Group company. Bio-based materials such as MR-160DG and MR-174 deliver lower CO₂ emissions than petroleum-based alternatives and are certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Japan Organics Recycling Association (JORA), while ongoing development of chemical recycling technologies aims to support a more circular eyewear value chain, the announcement noted.
