What dental PPOs actually cover for 4 common procedures – Becker’s Dental Review

Dental PPO plans cover preventive care, but patients absorb a significant share of costs for more common restorative procedures, according to data from DentalInsurance.com.

Here is how much patients pay out of pocket for four common procedures under a PPO plan:

  • Fillings: 38%
  • Crowns: 64%
  • Root canals: 64%
  • Dental implants: 57%

PPO plans also cap annual coverage through a maximum benefit, which averages $2,210 per year and ranges from $500 to $10,000.

The report analyzed 1,196 dental plans offered by 19 insurance companies — 94% of which were PPO plans — all from the 2026 plan year.

At the Becker’s 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
